Caustic soda, also known as lye and Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a caustic metallic base. It is used in many industries, mostly as a strong chemical base in the manufacture of pulp and paper, textiles, drinking water, soaps and ***ergents and as a drain cleaner.
Pure sodium hydroxide is a white solid available in pellets, flakes, granules, and as a 50% saturated solution. It is hygroscopic and readily absorbs water from the air, so it should be stored in an airtight container. It is very soluble in water with liberation of heat. It also dissolves in ethanol and methanol, though it exhibits lower solubility in these solvents than does potassium hydroxide. Molten sodium hydroxide is also a strong base, but the high temperature required limits applications. It is insoluble in ether and other non-polar solvents. A sodium hydroxide solution will leave a yellow stain on fabric and paper.
Caustic Soda is highly corrosive to skin tissue and the eyes and must be handled with care. Appropriate warnings, safety showers and eyewash stations must be located in all areas where Caustic Soda is stored or used. It is highly recommended that Caustic Soda be handled only by trained personnel wearing long sleeve clothing and equipped with protective eye goggles, rubber gloves, body apron, respirator and other safety equipment as required. Additionally, personnel who handle Caustic Soda need to know that considerable heat will be generated when water is added to the caustic solution.
Caustic Soda is a highly versatile chemical. Included among its many applications are the following: Acid neutralization, bleaching in paper making and cotton processing, petroleum refining, production of alumina from bauxite, manufacturing synthetic fabrics such as rayon, production of soaps and ***ergents, and also manufacturing food products.
